Crude oil.....

Different locations in the world provide different chemical structures of crude, the thickness and viscosity are measures of this. Some have a lower sulphur content over others which are known as 'sweet crude' (below 0.5%) and the higher sulphur contents are known as 'sour crudes' (above 0.5%).

Additionally, density is considered and a lower density crude (>31.1API) is referred to as a 'light crude' and a higher density crude (<22.3API) is referred to as a 'heavy crude'.

A 'light and sweet' crude such as 'Brent Blend' is an ideal crude for refining as it is easier to refine, less damaging to the environment and provides a greater petroleum yield.
